ಏಕೋನಷಷ್ಠಿತಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ

ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋಮಹಾತ್ಮಾsಥ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತಾನ್ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತಾನ್ ಋಷೀನ್ |
ಅಬ್ರವೀನ್ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲ ಸರ್ವಾಂಸ್ತಾನ್ ವನವಾಸಿನಃ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲ ! ಅಥ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಃ ತಾನ್ ಪ್ರಸ್ಠಿತಾನ್ ಋಷೀನ್ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತಾಂ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ವನವಾಸಿನಃ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ |

'Oh Rama ! Then the great soul Viswamitra addressed the Rishis about to leave and all the forest dwellers'.

ಮಹಾನ್ ವಿಘ್ನಃ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತೋsಯಂ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮಾಸ್ಥಿತೋ ದಿಶಮ್ |
ದಿಶಮನ್ಯಾಂಪ್ರಪತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಃ ತತ್ರ ತಪ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಹೇ ತಪಃ ||

ಸ|| ಅಯಂ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ದಿಶಮ್ ಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಮಹಾನ್ ವಿಘ್ನಃ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಃ | ಅನ್ಯಾಂ ದಿಶಮ್ ಪ್ರಪತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಃ | ತತ್ರ ತಪಃ ತಪ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಹೇ ( ವಯಂ)||

"Being in this Southern direction there have been great impediments. Let us move in another direction. We will do our penance there".

ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಯಾಂ ವಿಶಾಲಾಯಾಂ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಷು ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ|
ಸುಖಮ್ ತಪಶ್ಚರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಃ ವರಂ ತದ್ಧಿ ತಪೋವನಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ವಿಶಾಲಾಯಾಂ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಯಾಂ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಷು ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ( ಸನ್ತಿ) | ತತ್ರ ಸುಖಂ ತಪಃ ಚರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಃ| ತದ್ಧಿ ತಪೋವನಮ್ ವರಂ (ಅಸ್ತಿ)|

Great souls are in the spacious Pushkaras in the westerly direction. We will do our penance there in peace. The penance groves there are the best.

ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಷು ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ|
ತಪ ಉಗ್ರಂ ದುರಾಧರ್ಷಂ ತೇಪೇ ಮೂಲಫಲಾಶನಃ ||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಮಹಾಮುನಿಃ ಏವಂ ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಪುಷ್ಕರೇಷು ಮೂಲ ಫಲಾಶನಃ ಉಗ್ರಂ ದುರಾದರ್ಷಂ ತಪಃ ತೇಪೇ ||

'Having said so the supremely radiant venerable sage living only on fruits and roots, went on doing intense penance which is not possible for any others in those Pushkaras'.

ಏತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನೇವ ಕಾಲೇ ತು ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಧಿಪತಿರ್ನೃಪಃ |
ಅಂಬರೀಷ ಇತಿ ಖ್ಯಾತೋ ಯಷ್ಠುಂ ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ ||

ಸ|| ಏತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನೇವ ಕಾಲೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಧಿಪತಿ ಅಂಬರೀಷ ಇತಿ ಖ್ಯಾತೋ ನೃಪಃ ಯಷ್ಟುಂ ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ ||

'At the same time there was a king of Ayodhya by name Ambarisha who started a sacrifice'.

ತಸ್ಯವೈ ಯಜಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಪಶುಮಿಂದ್ರೋ ಜಹಾರ ಹ |
ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟೇ ತು ಪಶೌ ವಿಪ್ರೋ ರಾಜಾನಮ್ ಇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

ಸ|| ಯಜಮಾನಸ್ಯ ತಸ್ಯ ಪಶುಂ ಇಂದ್ರೋ ಜಹಾರ ಹ | ಪಶೌ ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟೇ ತು ವಿಪ್ರಾಃ ರಾಜಾನಮ್ ಇದಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

'The sacrificial animal of the sacrifice was stolen by Indra . When the animal was thus stolen the priests told the following to the king'.

ಪಶುರದ್ಯ ಹೃತೋ ರಾಜನ್ ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟಸ್ತವ ದುರ್ನಯಾತ್ |
ಅರಕ್ಷಿತಾರಂ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಘ್ನಂತಿ ದೋಷಾ ನರೇಶ್ವರ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಜನ್ ! ತವ ದುರ್ನಯಾತ್ ಅದ್ಯ ಪಶುಃ ಹೃತೋ ಪ್ರಣಷ್ಟಃ | ಹೇ ನರೇಶ್ವರಾ ! ಅರಕ್ಷಿತಾರಂ ರಾಜಾನಂ ದೋಷಾ ಘ್ನಂತಿ ||

"Oh Rajan ! Because of your poor leadership the animal was trapped and lost today. O King the lapse of being unable to protect can be fatal to the king".

ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತಂ ಮಹದ್ಧ್ಯೇತತ್ ನರಂ ವಾ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ |
ಆನಯಸ್ವ ಪಶುಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಯಾವತ್ ಕರ್ಮ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ ! ಏತತ್ ಮಹತ್ ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಅನಯಶ್ವ ಪಶುಂ ವಾ ನರ ಯಾವತ್ ಕರ್ಮ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ ||

"O King ! For the expiation of the great sin quickly get the animal or a man while the sacrifice is going on. "

ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ ವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಸ ರಾಜಾ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ |
ಅನ್ವಿಯೇಷ ಮಹಾಬುದ್ಧಿಃ ಪಶುಂ ಗೋಭಿಃ ಸಹಶ್ರಸಃ ||
ದೇಶಾನ್ ಜನಪದಾಂ ಸ್ತಾಂ ಸ್ತಾನ್ ನಗರಾಣಿ ವನಾನಿ ಚ |
ಆಶ್ರಮಾಣಿ ಚ ಪುಣ್ಯಾನಿ ಮಾರ್ಗಮಾಣೋ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ ||

ಸ|| ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ ವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಸ ರಾಜಾ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ ಪಶುಂ ಗೋಭಿಃ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ ಮಹಾಬುದ್ಧಿಃ ಅನ್ವಿಯೇಷ || ಮಾರ್ಗಮಾಣೋ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ ದೇಶಾನ್ ಜನಪದಾಂ ನಗರಾಣಿ ವನಾನಿ ಪುಣ್ಯಾನಿ ಆಶ್ರಮಾನಿಚ ||

'Having heard the Purohits words that king, a bull among men, went in search of a right animal in exchange for thousands of cows. The king went to various lands , cities, forest groves,auspicious Ashramas in his search'.

ಸ ಪುತ್ತ್ರ ಸಹಿತಂ ತಾತ ಸಭಾರ್ಯಂ ರಘುನಂದನ |
ಭೃಗುತುಂಗೇ ಸಮಾಸೀನಮ್ ಋಚೀಕಂ ಸಂದದರ್ಶಹ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ತಾತ !ಹೇ ರಘುನಂದನ ! ಭೃಗುತುಂಗೇ ಸ ಭಾರ್ಯಂ ಸ ಪುತ್ತ್ರ ಸಹಿತಂ ಸಮಾಸೀನಂ ಋಚೀಕಂ ಸಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಹ ||

'O Dear one ! Raghunandana ! on the mountain side of Brigutunga, the king saw Sage Ruchika seated along with his wife and children'.

ತಮುವಾಚ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯಾಭಿ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯಚ |
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮರ್ಷಿಂ ತಪಸಾ ದೀಪ್ತಂ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿರಮಿತ ಪ್ರಭಃ ||

ಸ|| ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಅಭಿ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ ಚ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮರ್ಷಿಂ ತಪಸಾ ದೀಪ್ತಂ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಅಮಿತ ಪ್ರಭಃ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ತಂ ಉವಾಚ ||

'Having paid obeisance and obtaining his grace, the king spoke to the venerable sage who is a Brahmarshi glowing with the power of penance'.

ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾಸರ್ವತ್ರ ಕುಶಲಂ ಋಚೀಕಂ ತಂ ಇದಂ ವಚಃ |
ಗವಾಂ ಶತಸಹಸ್ರೇಣ ವಿಕ್ರೀನೀಷೇ ಸುತಂ ಯದಿ ||
ಪಶೋರರ್ಥೇ ಮಹಾಭಾಗ ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯೋsಸ್ಮಿ ಭಾರ್ಗವ |

ಸ|| ಸರ್ವತ್ರ ಕುಶಲಂ ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಂ ಋಚೀಕಂ ಇದಂ ವಚಃ (ವದತಿ) ಹೇ ಭಾರ್ಗವ ಪಶೋಃ ಅರ್ಥೇ ಯದಿ ಸುತಂ ವಿಕ್ರೀಷೇ ಕೃತ ಕೃತ್ಯೋಸ್ಮಿ |

'Having enquired about welfare all-around he spoke to sage Ruchika as follows. "Oh Bhargava ! If you can sell your son in exchange for the sacrificial animal I will deem myself to be successful".

ಸರ್ವೇ ಪರಿಸೃತಾ ದೇಶಾ ಯಾಜ್ಞೀಯಂ ನ ಲಭೇ ಪಶುಮ್||
ದಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ ಮೂಲ್ಯೇನ ಸುತಮೇಕಮಿತೋ ಮಮ ||

ಸ|| ಯಾಜ್ಞೀಯಂ ಸರ್ವೇ ದೇಶಾ ಪರಿಸೃತಾ | ನ ಲಭೇ ಪಶುಂ| ಮೂಲ್ಯೇನ ಸುತಂ ಏಕಂ ದಾತುಂ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ |

" I was searching for the sacrificial animal in all lands. But I cannot find the animal. Give me your son for the right amount"

ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಋಚೀಕಸ್ತ್ವಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಚಃ |
ನಾಹಂ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಂ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ವಿಕ್ರೀಣೀಯಾಂ ಕಥಂಚನ ||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಏವಂ ಉಕ್ತೋ ಋಚೀಕಃ ಇದಂ ವಚಃ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ | ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಅಹಂ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಂ ಕಥಂಚನ ನ ವಿಕ್ರಿಣೀಯಾಂ |

'When the highly radiant one spoke as above , venerable sage Ruchika replied as follows. "I cannot give my eldest son under any circumstances".

ಋಚೀಕಸ್ಯ ವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತೇಷಾಂ ಮಾತಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್ |
ಉವಾಚ ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲಮ್ ಅಂಬರೀಷಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀ ||

ಸ|| ಋಚೀಕಸ್ಯ ವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತೇಷಾಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್ ತಪಶ್ವಿನೀ ಮಾತಾ ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲಂ ಅಂಬರೀಷಂ ಉವಾಚ |

'Hearing the words of the great soul , the mother of those sons spoke to Ambarisha, the tiger among men'.
ಅವಿಕ್ರೇಯಂ ಸುತಂ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಮ್ ಭಗವಾನಾಹ ಭಾರ್ಗವ |
ಮಮಾಪಿ ದಯಿತಂ ವಿದ್ಧಿ ಕನಿಷ್ಠಂ ಶುನಕಂ ನೃಪ |
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಕನೀಯಸಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ನ ದಾಸ್ಯೇ ತವ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವ ||

ಸ|| ಭಗವಾನ್ ಭಾರ್ಗವ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಷ್ಠಂ ಸುತಂ ನ ವಿಕ್ರೇಯಂ (ಇತಿ) ಆಹ |ಹೇ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವ ! ಮಮಾಪಿ ಕನಿಷ್ಠಂ ಶುನಕಂ ದಯಿತಂ ವಿದ್ಧಿ |ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಕನೀಯಸಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ತವ ನ ದಾಸ್ಯೇ |

" Bhagavan Bhargava said he cannot sell the eldest son. Oh King! For me my youngest son Sunaka is dear . So I cannot part with him".

ಪ್ರಾಯೇಣ ಹಿ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಟಾಃ ಪಿತೃಷು ವಲ್ಲಭಾಃ |
ಮಾತೄಣಾಂತು ಕನೀಯಾಂಸಃ ತಸ್ಮಾದ್ರಕ್ಷೇ ಕನೀಯಸಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ನರಸ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ! ಪ್ರಾಯೇಣ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾಃ ಪಿತೃಷು ವಲ್ಲಭಾಃ | ಮಾತೄಣಾಂ ಕನೀಯಾಂಸಃ | ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ರಕ್ಷೇ ಕನೀಯಸಮ್ |

"Oh King In general the eldest is dear to a father and the youngest is dear to the mother . Hence I will protect the youngest".

ಉಕ್ತವಾಕ್ಯೇ ಮುನೌ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಮುನಿಪತ್ನ್ಯಾಂ ತಥೈವ ಚ |
ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಃ ಸ್ವಯಂ ರಾಮ ಮಧ್ಯಮೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಮ ! ಮುನೌ ತಥೈವ ಚ ಮುನಿಪತ್ನ್ಯಾಂ ಉಕ್ತ ವಾಕ್ಯೇ ಮಧ್ಯಮಃ ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಃ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

'Oh Rama hearing those words of the sage as well as the sages wife, Sunahsepha the middle one spoke as follows'.

ಪಿತಾ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಂ ಅವಿಕ್ರೇಯಂ ಮಾತಾ ಚಾಹ ಕನೀಯಸಮ್ |
ವಿಕ್ರೀತಂ ಮಧ್ಯಮಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ರಾಜನ್ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ನಯಸ್ವಮಾಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಜನ್ ! ಪಿತಾ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಟಂ ಅವಿಕ್ರೇಯಂ ಮಾತಾ ಚ ಕನೀಯಸಂ ಆಹ | ಮಧ್ಯಮಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಂ ವಿಕ್ರೀತಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ || ರಾಜನ್ ನಯಸ್ವ ಮಾಮ್

"Oh King! Father will not part with the eldest. The mother said she will not part with the youngest. I conclude that the middle one is sold. O King ! So you may take me."

ಗವಾಮ್ ಶತಶಸ್ರೇಣ ಶ್ಶುನಶೇಫಂ ನರೇಶ್ವರಃ |
ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತೋ ಜಗಾಮ ರಘುನಂದನ |

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಘುನಂದನ ! ಗವಾಂ ಶತಸಹಸ್ರೇಣ ಶುನಶೇಫಮ್ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಪರಮ ಪ್ರೀತೋ ನರೇಶ್ವರಃ ಜಗಾಮ |

'Oh Raghunandana ! Giving hundred thousand cows the king took Sunahsepha and went happily'.

ಅಂಬರೀಷಸ್ತು ರಾಜರ್ಷೀ ರಥಮಾರೋಪ್ಯ ಸತ್ವರಃ |
ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಂ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಜಗಾಮಾಶು ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ ||

ಸ|| ರಾಜರ್ಷೀ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ ಅಂಬರೀಷಸ್ತು ಶುನಶ್ಶೇಫಂ ರಥಮ್ ಆರೋಪ್ಯ ಅಶು ಜಗಾಮ ||

'Ambarisha who is highly radiant and also a Rajarshi took Sunahsepha on his chariot and went to his city'.

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಬಾಲಾಕಾಂಡೇ ಏಕಷಷ್ಠಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||

Thus the sixty first chapter of Balakanda in Ramayana comes to an end.
